THE BEST WAY TO FIND THE RIGHT WORDS FOR YOUR WEBSITE

Do you want to start a website but feel a huge block when trying to set it up?

I know when I designed my website I was totally clueless!

I looked at other sites and I loved their fresh design and how their categories that were just perfectly worded.

Then I came back to my blank page. Sigh…

In today’s post I’m going to tell you three of the ways that you’ve been looking for the best wording and why those way just don’t work for you.

Let’s get started.

So, you’re ready to create your website. You have a logo and special colors that you love. Now it’s time to write your hook also known as your catchphrase and you are stumped.

Misconception #1

If I look into a thesaurus I’ll find words that are unique.

What you find in a thesaurus are many words that are sort of your issue but not quite it.  After all, you’ve looked over a lot of websites and you’ve seen what’s out there.

Now categories are generalizations that everyone in your profession will have and they will be similar.  So your tagline should also be similar right?

NO WAY.

That’s absolutely the opposite of what you should do.

When you use catch phrases that everyone uses your clients are just going to look at that and skip on.

It’s like same ol, same ol…

You want a client to look at your site and in 3 seconds think, WOW, she really gets me…

Misconception #2

I can’t use the same word as my competitor or it will be stealing.

Common words are not owned by a person.

If I went to the doctor because I had pneumonia, I want him to say,  “you have pneumonia.”

I don’t want him to say, “you have a respiratory inflammation in your lungs caused by a bacteria or virus.” Because if it’s pneumonia, I want to know exactly that.  I don’t want my doctor to avoid the word, pneumonia, because it’s too common.

I want my doctor to tell me what will happen if it’s not treated and I want him to say that I have to take all of my medicine and have a chest x-ray or a shot or whatever it is that my pneumonia needs for me to heal.

I want him to be specific and use words that I can understand and relate to.  So, if you need to use a word that rings a bell with your clients, then that’s what you have to do.

Even if every other expert uses that SAME WORD.

Misconception #3

The best wording for my tagline will just come to me in a vision.

Do you usually have visions?

I used to think this. After all, I’m pretty creative, so if I just wait long enough and think about it and meditate on it, it will come.

Yeah, what I got was crickets

I was so blocked.  But that’s not the way to get a phrase that’s going to SPEAK to your audience.

You can wait and wait for inspiration but it might never happen.  And then where will you be…

I have to be told.  I have it spelled out for me.  I have to see it MOVE people.

A tagline that MOVES people, is the one that will last through the three seconds it takes someone to decide if you have what they need. Whether that’s a product or a service they need.  You have three seconds or less to get them to stay on your site.  If not, bye bye.

You have three seconds to inspire them to click your cart or dial your number. That’s it.

You have to be specific, even if you offer more than one type of service.

People will just click away if you are not speaking to them.

All right!  So when preparing to write your tagline you now know what to do.  Don’t use words from a thesaurus that sort of describe what you do,  don’t worry about using common words that other websites use because the public wants it simple and straight forward, and use the wording in your tagline that makes your customer think you have been reading their mind!
